Exploring the Principles of Wâhkôhtowin, Wahkohtowin, or Wahkootowin
We invite Métis community members, academics, researchers, Knowledge Keepers, Elders, students, and others engaged in Métis-focused work to join us in Winnipeg for Nakataymiihtowiin: A Métis Gathering to explore Wahkohtowin, November 5–9, 2026.
Nakataymiihtowiin will create a Métis-specific space for gathering, learning, sharing, and building relationships. Over several days, participants will have opportunities to take part in conversations, presentations, cultural activities, and informal gatherings designed to encourage connection and meaningful dialogue.
At the heart of the gathering is an opportunity to spend time together: to exchange knowledge and experiences, strengthen relationships between community and academic spaces, and consider what makes a gathering feel welcoming, culturally sustaining, relational, and distinctly Métis.
The gathering is also part of a larger research project exploring how Métis-specific spaces can support connection, belonging, and well-being. What we learn together in Winnipeg will help inform the development of best practices for future Métis gatherings and contribute to a Framework of Métis Gathering Design. Participants will have opportunities to share their perspectives about their experiences of the gathering and what they believe should shape Métis gatherings in the future.
Whether you come to participate in conversations, reconnect with community, meet new people, or simply spend time in a Métis-centred space, we hope you will join us.
Come gather, connect, share, and imagine what Métis gathering spaces can be.
